If you are visiting this village in
Haryana, think twice before abusing anyone. If you do so, you may get thrashed
or even canned.
Yes, you read that right. The sarpanch
of Talauda village, about 15 kms from Jind district in Haryana, has launched a
campaign against the cusswords which mention women. He is not alone. He is
backed by all the women of the village in this campaign.
Madanlal, the village sarpanch, said:
“These days people abuse instinctively. Even for petty issues and spats they
use cusswords denigrating women. To put an end to all this the women folk of my
village and I have joined hands and have run several programmes and rallies.
Now, even senior elders and youth endeavor not to used cusswords and avoid
repercussions.”
Talking about the campaign’s origin, Madanlal
said: “I started the campaign on March 23, 2017 backed only by women from my
village, but now we have support of women even from the neighbouring villages.
If someone is found guilty of abusing, village women form a group and visit the
offender in his own house and protest there.”
Watch the video here:
Madanlal added, “If while quarreling
someone abuses and accepts that he did so unintentionally; he is still not spared
and is acted against. We seek panchayat for the resolution and since the matter is
serious we even lodge an FIR.”
With a population of over 3,000 this
village had its sarpanch abolish the parda
tradition towards women empowerment. Manjeet Kaur of Talauda said: “No one in
our village has the guts to abuse in words that demean women in any way. If
elders do so, all of the women protest. With this initiative of our sarpanch,
people have begun talking sensibly.” Manjeet added with a twinkle: “If, however,
a kid abuses, we give him a sharp rap.”
Like Manjeet all the women folk of the
village are quite pleased with the campaign. Another villager, Anita, said: “People
do not abuse in our village. Whoever dares to abuse is thereafter visited by
all of the women protest against his act. If we fail to convince the offender,
he is then visited by the sarpanch himself.”
The village’s sarpanch believes that in the village the use of cusswords involving mother-daughter aggravates the matter to the extent of a murder
This is a remarkable and historic
initiative of this village for which the sarpanch has also been recognized and
felicitated. Telling about an incident which had occurred in the village,
Madanlal said: “There have been two grave incidents of violence due to abusing
in the village. Whenever they quarrel, they abuse and say that it is their
personal matter. The entire women folks of the village had to stage a protest
in front of their house only then they admitted to their offence.”
Sarpanch’s initiated has also found
male sympathies besides all-women supporters. “Previously people used to
liberally abuse each other, but ever since the women have stood united against
it, every offender is promptly opposed and campaigned against. It is a fact
that previously using cusswords always aggravated the matter. People now being
afraid of the women’s organization, steer away from abusing one another,”
Talauda’s Surendra Singh informed Gaon
Connection.
Talauda’s sarpanch had appealed
several times to criminalize the use of cusswords demeaning women. He believes
that in the village the use of cusswords involving mother-daughter aggravates
the matter to the extent of a murder. People casually abuse one another so it
is necessary for it to be regulated.
