A day after a student attempted self-immolation at the ongoing protests against the alleged ‘400 per cent’ fee hike at Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad University, today, on September 20, three students allegedly consumed kerosene while another student climbed atop the terrace of the university with an LPG cylinder.

When Gaon Connection visited the protest site at the university, it was learnt that the three students who consumed kerosene have been rushed to the hospital. Details about the medical condition of the three students are still awaited, however, as per the latest update received on the status of the student who had climbed atop the terrace with the gas cylinder, the protester has been brought down by the police.

Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters are still participating in the agitation which demands a roll back of the hike in the university’s fees. It is learnt that a group of students under the banner of ‘Chhatrasangh Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti’ have been protesting the fee hike.

The students’ protest has earned the support from the political quarters. Former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have supported the students’ demand to roll back fees.

Yadav tweeted yesterday that the BJP government in the state is forcing students to resort to immolate themselves. Talking to the press from within the university premises, Santosh Kumar Meena, the superintendent of police in Allahabad stated that the students trying to kill themselves in protest have been brought under control.

“We are monitoring the situation closely. So, far the primary objective is not to let the students indulge in any untowardly incident,” Meena said.
