World Environment Day

At AJB Upper Primary School in Kalpathy, Palakkad district in Kerala, children from classes one and two celebrated World Environment Day today.

About 20 students took part in the ceremony at the government-aided school. Ente Chedi, or My Plant, was the theme for the day, with each child being given a plant of his or her own.

Also known as Appa School, the AJB Upper Primary School was established in 1935.

The Environment Day project started a week in advance, when parents were asked to get their children to plant a sapling, take a video of that and send it to the school. The videos were then sent to Mrs Jincy, their principal.

The videos were edited and set to music and shown to the children. The translated lyrics of the song on the video are as follows:

Let’s plant a plant for the children,

Let’s plant a plant for the earth,

Let’s plant a plant for the birds …

A retired teacher from the school, the head of the Parents Teachers Association and a member of a group called Friends of Appa School, spoke to them about not littering, avoiding plastic and preventing erosion while caring for their plants.

The children were then sent out into the garden clutching vegetable seedlings that they planted in grow bags that were ready and waiting for them.
